Shell Jewellery

These beautiful, individually crafted, traditional tribal shell jewellery pieces are integral to the traditional Solomon Island culture, as they were originally made specifically for dowry payments in weddings. They are produced in different forms throughout the various Pacific Island countries but they are produced in larger numbers in the Solomon Islands. They are made by local island craftsmen/women and sold at local markets to locals, but now for the first time they are available for non-traditional purchase online to the wider public.

We are pleased to announce a new service available for shell jewellery purchase. Up until now only stock items and limited sizes and styles have been available to purchase, but we have now come to an agreement with local island craftspeople to individually make shell jewellery to requested lengths, styles and colours.

Now for as little as £9.95 and a maximum of £19.95, you can select any of the jewellery styles available in the E-shop, choose the length you want, the colour schemes, type of shells desired, and it will be individually hand made for you by local craftspeople to your specifications, and then shipped via DHL, right to your front door!

(NB PLEASE TURN OFF ALL POP-UP BLOCKING SOFTWARE WHEN PURCHASING FROM THE E-SHOP).

The process of making these shell jewellery items is painstaking and long. The necklaces are made primarily on the island of Malaita by a group of specialized craftsmen/women who divide the processes. The shells are gathered from various reefs and beaches and are first broken into roughly circular discs about 10mm in diameter. The sides are flattened; an abrasive powder is pounded down and used with water. They are then pierced and threaded on a cord stretched along a plank and the discs rubbed round. They are finally made up into strings of different value which are restrung into necklaces or bracelets.

It is a long and skillful process requiring hours on each necklace not including time spent gathering shells, but results in each necklace being unique and made with individual attention to detail.

If you represent a business or retailer, wholesale arrangements of 40% off marked price is available. Please contact us at info@solomonenterprises.co.uk for further details.
